Post Abortion Stress.
Contact.

Many people don't readily choose to have an abortion, but when they are faced with an unplanned pregnancy and the pressures of overwhelming circumstances there may seem like no other choice.

Immediately after an abortion the feeling is often of relief, because the problem has been dealt with. But the initial feeling of relief can be replaced later with a variety of emotions that were not expected.

Symptoms

Symptoms of post-abortion stress can surface months or years later. These include:

Depression

Feelings of guilt and remorse

A sense of emptiness and loss

Anger at family or friends

Low self esteem

If the answer is yes to any of the following questions you may benefit from post-abortion counselling:

When abortion is mentioned, do you find yourself backing off?

Are there certain times of the year that you find yourself depressed or ill, such     as the anniversary date of the abortion or birth date?

Are you resentful towards anyone because of their involvement in your abortion?

Have you experienced any peculiar reactions, i.e. nightmares or flashbacks     related to the abortion?

Have you felt a vague sort of emptiness or loss?

Do you tend to look at your life in terms of 'before' and 'after' the abortion?

Do you fear that you may not be able to have children in the future?

Most people feel they have to bury any thoughts and emotions about the abortion because no one will understand how they feel. Some don't think they should talk about it because the abortion was their choice, and there is no reason why they should be feeling so bad. Many fear being judged for their decision. Trying to deal with all this alone can be very traumatic.

Support is available for those struggling to come to terms with a past abortion.
